In contrast to the rest of Denmark, where the rune stones are predominantly pagan, most Bornholm runic stone are with a Christian influence.
Christianity on the island occurred later than in the rest of the country. Most runic stones can be dated to 10 Century after Christ, and has the same age as the early Christian grave-sites at Grodby in Aaker parish and Munkegaard i in Poulsker parish.
Originally, the stones have been placed by waterfront locations and hills, and probably at the oldest wood churches. Rune stones have since been recycled as building materials primarily in stone churches and as cover on bridges and as cobblestone.
